50 Kalo di Ciro Salvo

My New Year's resolution is to try and keep on top of these write-ups in a fashion more timely compared to last year. So, starting as I mean to go on, today I visited 50 Kalo di Ciro Salvo for an authentic neapolitan pizza. How authentic? Very.

50 Kalo di Ciro Salvo is voted 15th in the world by 50 Top Pizza for 2022, being the best in London. Further, 50 Kalo (the flagship restaurant in Italy) won best in the world in 2020, and came 4th in 2022. This, then, is premier neapolitan pizza. Supposedly.

When trying out a new pizzeria, I'll typically go for a margherita or napoletana. While I love Anchovies, going for the margherita allows for easy comparison seeing as though there's basically only three toppings: tomato sugo, fior di latte, and Basil.

This time I had the margherita and yeah - I can see why the pizza gets a lot of plaudits: the airy crust and super thin base are as neapolitan as it gets, with the sauce not at all soupy. 50 Kalo throw some olive oil onto the pizza too. Call me a non-traditionalist, but I think chili-accented olive oil works best. All-in-all, the pizza is very good, but didn't blow me away. I would have to come back to sample the napoletana to see if that can knock the old socks off.

At £15 for a margherita and diet coke, it's a good price for some premier pizza. The restaurant atmosphere isn't amazing - the music is quite loud and you often have to make a concerted effort to get a waiter's attention - but it's worth a stop if you're by picadilly circus or within walking distance.

Value for money? £15 for a pizza and drink, though can be £20 if you go for a more topping-packed pizza. But the pizza is very good, and the most authentically neapolitan you are likely to get in London.

Would I return? I wouldn't make a special effort, but if I was in the area and wanted to show friends the best neapolitan pizza in London, this would be the one.
