Bakery Round-Up: Popham's and Katsute100

Well well well, it looks like I have a new favourite bakery, and that bakery is called Popham's. This most recent Saturday I braved the midday cold for a journey into Islington, as I wanted to try two bakeries that I have been meaning to for a while. The first, around a fifteen minute walk from Angel tube station, was Popham's. Very much in the tradition of Danish bakeries, Popham's is known for having a line at all hours going out the door, and it was no exception when I rocked up. Sadly, one of the weekend specials - a pastry with kumquat and chantilly cream - was out by the time I arrived, though I did manage to get another weekend special, an apple crumble swirl with whiskey and pecans. There is no understating how good this pastry was. The pastry itself was flaky and golden, the filling rich and balanced. I also had the pain au chocolat (peak the incredible layers below), and a latte in an absolutely adorable little mug. Next to Popham's is a small store that sells local artisanal wares, so be sure to stop in after you've had your coffee.

In short, I can see why Popham's is much-loved, and already plan to go back next weekend.

After that, I headed back toward Angel tube station, and into Katsute100, a Japanese tea room known for its green teas and matcha patisserie. This patisserie again had a long line outside of it, and I had to make do with an outdoor seat. Fortunately, ordering was quick and easy, and the genmaicha latte I ordered was plenty hot enough to warm me up. I also went for a Mont Blanc tart, which looked the part but was actually a little dry. I would be interested to go back to try the matcha mille-crepes, but know that Kova also do this and would rather go back there.

The takeaway: Popham's rules.
