The Bull and Last

Now this is a gastro pub I can get behind. Frequently lauded as one of the finest that London has to offer, my visit to The Bull and Last for a Sunday roast prior to a walk around Hampstead Heath proved to be one of the best outings for a Sunday roast I've had in London. And that's no surprise, given that The Bull and Last has established itself as a Pub and Coaching Inn of significant repute over the past ten years.

Settling in the upstairs dining area, the pub gives off the vibe of a cosy way station, all wooden interiors bedecked with mounted buck heads and views towards the Heath (but not, one should note, of it). Our order was quick to be taken and food to come, with us both having a mulled cider and a half Norfolk chicken with all the trimmings. The chicken was succulent, the carrots wonderfully braised and the gravy rich. The roast potatoes were good though rather too crisp (cutting through them with a rounded knife was a chore!), and the bread sauce could have done with a touch more seasoning. But despite these niggles, this was a very good - and much needed - Sunday roast.

We also had desserts, but to be honest I've already forgotten them, so they couldn't have been that special. Yet despite that, I would happily return to The Bull and Last to sample some more of their delicious food.

Value for money? Around £50 per person for a main, dessert and mulled cider. Good food in a lovely setting, so yes.

Would I return? It's truly a lovely pub with good food, so I would be happy to, and hope to in the future.
