Yard Sale Pizza

This, right here, may be the best pizza in London. I've been on the lookout for a pizza in London that I can bestow that honour upon, but all have been lacking in some area or another. L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele? The sugo ain't all that. 50 Kalo? Best Neapolitan I've had, but lacking in range. Voodoo Rays? Good, but too American. The closest to greatest I've tried is Pizza Pilgrims' puttanesca, a beautiful bastard child of Italian and New York style pizza. Until now.

After visiting Three Sheets - voted 72 in the 2023 50 Best Bars long list - for cocktails, my brother and I decided to try out Yard Sale Pizza on Hackney Road. I am so glad we did, as this small pizzeria (though they have a number of branches throughout London) serves up a range of meaty and vegan pizzas, both individual 12 inch size and 18 inches for sharing.

We opted for the 18 inch Texas VBQ to share, a vegan pizza with Plant-based This isn't Chicken nuggets, BBQ sauce, sweetcorn, red onion, guindilla chillies, and vegan mayo. What struck me about the pizza was how wafer-thin the base was - similar to a Neapolitan - but was incredibly structurally strong; there was no drooping from these massive slices. The toppings all worked to create a perfect symphony of a pizza, and without any cheese or substitute! Who needs fior di latte, huh?

At £24 for an 18 inch, and for a pizza this good, this is an absolute steal. My journey for the best pizza in London will continue, as there are more places to try, but I won't be surprised if nothing beats this. Go try it.

Update 16th May, 2024:

How the mighty have fallen. I visited Yard Sale for their monthly special, a collaboration with Bleecker Burger, consisting of burger pieces, onions, Passat and a cheeseburger sauce. While the toppings were there, the seasoning was not. Worse, I found that their dough was not as I remembered; instead of being a New York style, the dough was incredibly thin at the base, leading to major droopage. On the basis of this visit, I wouldn't go back. So where does that leave us? I recommend the following: Go, but get an 18 inch pizza to share. Don't bother with the 12, or you'll be disappointed with the dough.

Value for money? £16 each for a drink, half an 18 inch pizza and a dip. Value, but only if you get the 18!

Would I return? Probably not, after the update.
