The Tamil Prince

At the beginning of October, I went for a Sunday lunch with a difference - a small feast (if there can be such a thing) at The Tamil Prince over in Islington. The Tamil Prince is a gastro pub serving Indian food that has been hailed as one of the best gastropubs in London. Given that I've been to a couple of the supposedly best gastropubs in London this year that haven't particularly knocked my socks off, I was hoping that this time would be different.

We started with the Prince's special masala dosa, and a couple of cocktails (including a pina colada). The cocktails were fairly good, though not a patch on what you would receive at one of London's top cocktail bars. The masala dosa was nicely spiced, though could have been crispier. The accompanying dips added nice pops of flavour.

We then moved onto the Thanjavur chicken curry, the channa bhatura with raita, and the Tawa grilled sea bream. The chicken curry was quite fine, though really nothing special, the channa bhatura more pleasing to look at than to eat, and the sea bream was unevenly seasoned. Overall, the mains (with the rice) were decent enough but wholly unmemorable.

Finally, for dessert we had gulab jamun, which I've never had before and is the thing I remember most about this meal for all the right reason. This was sensational, with the super moist consistency of how I believe sticky toffee puddings should be, as though this is the peak of STP. Amazing.

Overall, The Tamil Prince provides a nice outing, but the food is too unmemorable to recommend.

Value for money? Around £110 including service for 2. It's quite a lot for a meal that is just okay, so no.

Would I return? No.
